The United States has officially shuttered its consulate in Jerusalem, downgrading the status of its main diplomatic mission to Palestine.
For decades, the consulate functioned as a de facto embassy to the Palestinians. Now, that outreach will be handled by a Palestinian affairs unit under the comment of the US Embassy to Israel.
Palestinian leaders see the decision as another move against them by US President Donald Trump’s administration, with which they froze contact after his 2017 decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Mohammed Cherkaoui, a senior fellow at the Al Jazeera Center for Studies, offers his analysis on the move.
